(Synopsis) 1962, Youmadi primary school, in the Year of the Tiger. Eleven-year-old Sangsang (Cao Dan), born in the Year of the Dragon, learns some hard lessons of life through clashes with his father (the school's head), his schoolmates, his first love, and his own conscience. This multilayered adaptation by Cao Wenxuan of his own novel, echoes Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn's experiences. Sangsang becomes a go-between - exactly like the young boy in Joseph Losey's masterpiece - even though there are less poisonous issues concealed in the rural Chinese landscape. Liu Lihua's enchanting camerawork captures the changing seasons and passage of time at the simple school by the river. This contemplative, elegiac work, directed by Xu Geng, is masterfully worked out from the first to last frame.
