Young orphans under the care of Mitsumasa Kido of the Kido Foundation are forced to undergo years of arduous training in different regions of the world to become powerful warriors known as Bronze Saints. Their sole purpose - to protect Athena, Goddess of War. Every champion is awarded a Cloth - a sacred armor representing a constellation or mythical character. Although they can be very strong, the Cloths are not intended to be used as protection. In a sense, the Cloths are alive or enchanted and give the Saints the ability to enhance powers within themselves known as cosmos. When the Cloths are not in use, they fit together to form a statue. Below are examples of the Andromeda, Dragon, Cygnus, Pegasus, and Phoenix Bronze Cloths in statue form.
As the series begins, ten young Bronze Saints -- including Seiya, the Pegasus Saint, and the main character of Kurumada's tale - have converged in Japan to compete against one another for the coveted Gold Sagittarius Cloth.
Although the law strictly forbids the Saints of Athena to fight one another, some have been blackmailed to compete, some ordered to compete by their trainers, and others fought out of sheer greed. As the tournament begins, the Bronze Saints become jaded when Athena fails to reveal herself. The competition becomes fierce when the tournament is suddenly interrupted by an unexpected foe. Little do they realize the Sagittarius Cloth holds secrets of a dark past and an uncertain future.
Hades Sanctuary Chapter - A spell has been broken and Hades, God of the Dead, has been set free. Faced with a challenge of epic proportions, the reincarnated Athena and her Saint warriors of Sanctuary must fight for their survival against Hades and his formidable legions. Seiya and his loyal group of Bronze Saints have been ordered not to interfere in the great war against Hades and his army of 108 Spectors. Only Athena's strongest warriors, the Gold Saints, can combat the forces of Hades. With the Bronze Saints exiled from battle and the deceased Saints returning from the dead to serve Hades, Athena must find a way to stop Hades before he is able to reclaim his body from one of her beloved Bronze Saints. If she fails, it could lead to her destruction and that of all mankind.
