Saber Marionette J, also affectionately dubbed "SMJ" for short, is an anime about a planet in which only men exist, called Terra 2. A space ship of 6 men crash-landed on a foriegn planet in order to continue their race, because they could no longer live on Terra. The 6 men were worried that they would not be able to continue their culture because it was impossible for them to procreate amongst themselves. However, they had the technology of cloning, in which they used to populate the planet with men. Over the years, the clones had altered, and only a select few still had the same features of the original 6. The 6 men who were the EXACT clones of the original six ruled a specific part of the planet, which was now broken up into 6 countries. Now on this planet of solely men, there is a large desire for the accompaniment of woman; after many failed attempts to recreate the human woman through cloning, they created lifeless robots called "Marionettes".
Marionettes fill the gap that has been empty for centuries. Most of the marionettes seem boring and lifeless, for they lack feelings, heart, and personality which could not be recreated from the real woman. Although, in the past, there were Marionettes that did infact have personality and could have feelings such as love, hate, and desire. These special marionettes had a certain "maiden circuit" which allowed them to have such feelings. But nobody had remembered these maiden circuit marionettes for years, and hardly anyone knew about them. Thus the story comes to a young boy by the name of Otaru Mamiya, who lives in the country of Japoness.
Otaru, being too poor to afford a Marionette, never had the luxury of a "woman". But one day as he was exploring an old run-down museum, Otaru slips into a secret room in which a large glowing pod is situated. Upon looking at the pod, he sees that a marionette is sleeping within it! Curiosly, Otaru touches the glass window of the pod, and a big flash occurs, and the Marionette known as "Lime" awakens. Later on, Otaru is called in to see the ruler of Japoness, Ieyasu Tokugawa. While in the meeting, Otaru is asked how he thinks Lime is different from other Marionettes and he explains how she loves and blah blah blah. Suddently another Maiden Circuit marionette attacks Ieyasu. While Otaru rushes to help the ruler, he is smacked away by the marionette. In turn, this angers Lime, and a big battle occurs. During the battle, Cherry is awakened, who happened to be in a utility closet (?). He continues on and Otaru ultimately gains three marionettes: Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry (More come later on into the series or in the other Saber Marionette series', but I wont go into that).
Now with three people living with him, he has to work more in order to support everyone. The marionettes also get jobs, but end up messing up somehow and getting fired. Otaru's neighbor, Hanagata, isn't very happy with the Marionettes and wishes to tell Otaru that his love would be so much better than the love of the three marionettes. This does create some tension on Hanagata's side, between him and the marionettes, but he doesn't tend to show it.
Later on Faust, the Fuher of Gartlant, who also has obtained three maiden circuit marionettes, declares war on Japoness. Now, with his three super-strong marionettes, Otaru is asked by the government of Japoness to infiltrate the enemy country, and the story continues to follow their adventures of thwarting Faust's future plans.
