The Tokugawa Dynasty of Japan had been reigning since 1603. However on January 3rd, 1868, opposing Japanese Imperialists performed a successful coup d'�tas, seizing power into their hands. Legend has it that there was a swordsman with such power that he was responsible for carving this new Era. His name was Kenshin.
The year is now 11 Meiji -- 1879. The one named Himura Kenshin had mysteriously left during the end of the Meiji Restoration. He is now a wanderer (Ronin), using his sword to protect the people and government of the Meiji.
One of Kenshin's first acquaintances in the series is a young woman named Kamiya Kaoru. Through Kenshin's self-less acts of heroism, he saves the day and decides to stop wandering and stay at her place for a time.
Gradually, Kenshin bumps into some other fellows. These include Yahiko Myojin, a teenage descendent of the Samurai and a man by the name of Sanosuke Sagara. All of whom he either saves or indoctrinates his "No Killing" principles to.
