The prominent comedy serial with two parts, produced in 1995 by Stephen Chow (Hong Kong), is about to be recast, Chow made an official announcement at a news briefing yesterday.
Chow made the speech during www.netease.com celebration for the two-year birthday of the launch of the game "Chinese Odyssey Part Two - Cinderella," adapted partially from Chow's film.
The multi-player online game rose to world-wide fame within two years just as the film did itself since 1996.
Chow disclosed that the improved version will be based on the game plot, rather than the original film.
The original version of "Chinese Odyssey Part I - Pandora's Box" and "Part II - Cinderella" have been rated as excellent and funny by many English language film clubs, such as review centers KFCC and FilmAsia, and some online DVD portals.
However, the plot of the film has long been blamed for being hardy.
The story developed with the progress of reincarnated Monkey King (heroed by Chow) and his love with a shy beauty called Zi Xia, resembling Cinderella in western fable, is not defined as Chow's typical comedies that roll on the floor funny, but the best of Chow's works.
It's funny and amusing, rather than being oversaturated with irrelevant jokes.
The complicated relationship between roles and the time-changing box, or Pandora's Box, that takes Monkey King to yesterday and today back and forth randomly, really baffled viewers, especially the foreigners who base their understanding on English subtitles.
"The recast will be easy to understand," Chow said, claiming that the new production is better to be put as "the updating of the vintage film with developed plot and advanced technology."
"It's time to employ computer technology and advanced animation to make vintage films complete," Chow added.
The special effects of the films produced in the 1990s lag far behind those used in latest films, such as Matrix Reloaded, Finding Nemo and Terminator 3.
However, Chow didn't specify when to start with the recast. Currently he is busy with his new film "Kongfu" in Shanghai which is expected to finish in two months.
