The story revolves around a 14 year-old boy named Shinji Ikari, who's father, Gendo, is the director of NERV, a top secret organization formed to destroy the invading angels. The "Angels" are an alien life-form and essentially messengers of God sent to Earth to punish man.

Early on, Shinji is swept into battle when it turns out he is the only one in a condition to pilot the Evangelion (and is from then on the "Third Child") and defeat an invading angel. It is made horrifically apparent that there is more to the Eva than just a pilot and a mecha. These Eva's have a mind of their own.

Shinji also meets some more characters such as Misato Katsuragi, who works at NERV. Shinji also meets The First and The Second Children, Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu.

Although it seems as if the only problem that lies is the conflict between Humanity and God, a much more intricate plot is weaving its way through the story.
