In sharp contrast with the conventional heroes of integrity, prowess and masculinity, the one in Mad Mad Mad Sword is an common man with numerous weaknesses and a complete worthless student of a prestigious school. To the surprise of all, however, he manages to defeat a string of renowned swordsmen, including the one-armed swordsman and the blind swordsman, by tricks and luck. A hilarious parody of the martial arts genre which was hugely popular during the late 1960s, the film makes one recall the Spaghetti Westerns of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, or such spoofs as Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks, all of which, nonetheless, were made in the mid-Seventies. Directed by the prolific Wong Tin Lam (father of Wong Jing), it's both surprisingly inspiring and highly entertaining.
