(Synopsis)
A middle school senior in modern Japan named Miaka and her friend Yui get sucked into an old Chinese book. There they meet a boy named Tamahome and the Emperor of China, Hotohori, who decides Miaka will become the legendary Priestess of Suzaku. A search is begun for the Suzaku Seven, people with characters meaning different constellations on their bodies. A soap-opera-like set of romantic complications appear between them a individual named Nuriko. Then the neighboring nation of Kutou and their Priestess of Sieryu beings to pose a threat that they must meet and deal with while seeking the rest of the Seven and then the god Genbu and his treasures. Meanwhile, people in the real world read along with their adventures.
